Amigurumi jellyfish

Introduction

The motivation for this pattern comes from the fact that I did a lot of amigurumi of aquatic animals recently and I thought that a jellyfish with long tentacles would be very cute and snuggle material. After looking at different patterns online, I decided to create my own.

The characteristic that I wanted for sure was long tentacles that curled. I think this effect it adorable and adds some character to the design. The ultimate goal was to make the biggest jelly fish that could still fit comfortably on a desk as a cute decoration.

Materials

  • 5 mm hook
  • Stitch markers
  • 6 weight yarn (in this pattern, Sweet Snuggles™ Lite Yarn by Loops Threads)
    • For the tentacles : 30 g (24 m)
    • For the base and the body : 50 g (40 m)
  • Safety eyes 14 mm
  • Polyfill

Pattern notes

This pattern is worked in rounds, so it is important to mark the last stitch of each round with a stitch marker.

If no number is provided in front of a stitch, do 1.

The pattern is using US terminology.

Terminology

R : round

(…) x n : do what is in the parenthesis n
times

inc : increase

dec : invisible derease

st : stitch

ch : chain

sl st : slip stitch

sc : single crochet

Steps

Cut the yarn, and attach the two tails together with a knot.

R2 : 6 inc. (12)

R3 : (sc, inc) x 6. (18)

R4 : (2 sc, inc) x 6. (24)

Put a stitch marker in the last stitch of R4.

Close.

Attach a tentacle in each corner of the hexagon formed by the base at R3. The stitches are marked with yellow stitch markers in this image :

I have a section in the annex in case you would like some instructions on how to attach the tentacles to the base.

Body

R1 : 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)

R2 : 6 inc. (12)

R3 : (sc, inc) x 6. (18)

R4 : (2 sc, inc) x 6. (24)

Put the eyes between R7 and R8 about 8 sts apart.

R15 : Attach the base to the body with sc making sure that the tentacles will be outside. For the first one, take the first st of R15 and the last from the base (the one we marked earlier). When there is about 8 sts left to connect, add the polyfill to your liking and finish attaching.

Add a stitch marker in the first st of R15

R16 : ((sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc), sl st) x 12

Details

For the details, I like to add a little smile and some cheeks. They add a lot of personality to the project. For detailed explanation on the technique I use, please refer to the annex.

Smile

For the smile, here’s a summary of the technique

  1. Take a length of yarn and put it on your needle (for an amigurumi made with 6 weight yarn, I
    use a 4-weight yarn).
  2. Insert the needle in a stitch on the side of the body and make it come out where you want the
right corner of your smile to be. Leave a tail about 4-5 inches long going out of the side of the
    body.
  3. Insert the needle where you want the left corner of your smile to be and make it come out
between the 2 corners, one stitch below.
  4. Go through the same stitch again, making sure to trap the loop you just created. The needle
should go out from the stitch in step 1.
  5. Make a knot with the two tails.
  6. Put both tails on your needle, make them go through the stitch they come out of and take them
    out a little further.
  7. Cut the yarn.

Here’s the final result :

Cheeks
  1. Take a length of pink yarn and put it on your needle (for an amigurumi made with 6-weight
yarn, I use a 6-weight yarn as well).
  2. Insert the needle in a stitch on the side of the body and make it come out where you want the
right side of the right cheek.
  3. Insert the needle one stitch to the left coming out the stitch you were in (effectively just wrapping around the stitch once).
  4. Insert the needle once again one stitch to the left, but this time making it come out where you
want the right side of the left cheek to be.
  5. Repeat step 3.
  6. Insert the needle once again one stitch to the left, this time making it come out the stitch you
    entered in step 1.
  7. Make a knot with the two tails.
  8. Put both tails on your needle, make them go through the stitch they come out of and take them
    out a little further.
  9. Cut the yarn.
